Why do we have to choose?[]

Any information or speculation about why the designers decided that having to choose between the two ultra combos before playing was a good idea? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 85.68.70.97 (talkcontribs)

Read the article, it's similar to the Super Arts; different super moves equal different styles of play. Lord Grammaticus (talk) 17:44, January 1, 2014 (UTC)
I did read the article, and just read it again to follow your advice. All I can find about the fact that there are two ultra combos is the following sentence: “Starting from Super Street Fighter IV, the player can select between two different Ultra Combos.” What am I missing? The Super Arts article states that the choice of three super arts gives “the player a chance to come up with a strategy on how to use it effectively against the opponent”, which is too vague for me (as that can be said for any move). I can understand that a different choice of moves leads to a different style of play, as is evidenced by the differing move sets of each character, but I can’t see how this single choice of one of two moves that will only be pulled once or twice per round impacts the style of play (note that I’m new to SFIV and never played SFIII). Any examples (videos, perhaps) would be welcome. Also, if the designers did talk about this matter, I’d be interested in what they had to say.
Well, that's just it; even if it's only once or twice, you're still gonna use the Ultra, and that means you want to adjust your playstyle to get the most out of the one you selected. That doesn't mean you should depend on it, just that different Ultras require different setups, counters, etc. The fact that USFIV may go the Alpha route and let you potentially use both in a match tweaks me off slightly... but later for that. It's the same concept with Super Arts, the main difference is that Super Arts also decide how many EX moves you can store, which means wise use of meter is all the more important in deciding which moves to focus on and how to use them.
As for the best sources for illustrating this concept, I can't point you towards any speciic ones right this moment, but I'll make it a priority to find some. Lord Grammaticus (talk) 09:44, January 2, 2014 (UTC)
